The inside story of the booming video game industry from the late 1990s to the present, as told by the Managing Director of Ubisoft's Massive Entertainment (The Division, Far Cry 3, Assassin's Creed: Revelations). At Massive Entertainment, a Ubisoft studio, a key division of one of the largest, most influential companies in gaming, Managing Director Polfeldt has had a hand in some of the biggest video game franchises of today, from Assassin's Creed to Far Cry to Tom Clancy's The Division, the fastest-selling new series this generation which revitalized the Clancy brand in gaming. In The Dream Architects, Polfeldt charts his course through a charmed, idiosyncratic career which began at the dawn of the Sony PlayStation and Microsoft Xbox era -- from successfully pitching an Avatar game to James Cameron that will digitally create all of Pandora to enduring a week-long survivalist camp in the Scandinavian forest to better understand the post-apocalyptic future of The Division. Along the way, Polfeldt ruminates on how the video game industry has grown and changed, how and when games became art, and the medium's expanding artistic and storytelling potential. He shares what it's like to manage a creative process that has ballooned from a low-six-figure expense with a team of a half dozen people to a transatlantic production of five hundred employees on a single project with a production budget of over a hundred million dollars. A rare firsthand account of the golden age of game development told in vivid detail, The Dream Architects is a seminal work about the biggest entertainment medium of today.

Who Gets Funds from China's Capital Market?
50,61 € *

The subject of this book is an analysis of the business models developed or adopted by Chinese small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs), specifically those that are successfully listed on China's capital market, in other words, it is a dissection of those Chinese business models that have "worked." In China, there are over 10 million companies that are registered with China's State Industrial and Commercial Administration and over 40 million unregistered businesses. Among them, only about 1,000 companies became successfully listed on China's capital market and were able to obtain public funds from equity investors. This book takes a look at who these "lucky ones" were and what business models led to their success in a highly competitive Chinese market, investigations that will certainly be of interest to both Chinese and international readerships. In addition, this book provides a nuanced and micro view of the Chinese economy. As China's economy increasingly receives attention worldwide, the amount of research and publications on China's economy is also growing exponentially. However, the majority of these studies only focus on the macro level of the Chinese economy and aggregate variables such as GDP, growth rate, inflation, etc., while little research has been done at a micro and company level to analyze the Chinese economy. Thus, this book's focus on the case studies of representative firms may help fill some gaps in the study of business and the economy in China.Furthermore, this book hopes to dispel certain misconceptions about the nature of the Chinese economy. There is currently a stereotypical view about Chinese economy, for example that China, as the workshop of the world, primarily produces low-end products with low prices to be sold in other countries by budget retailers like Wal-Mart or dollar stores. While that is true to some extent, it is certainly not the whole story. The companies analyzed in this book cover a wide spectrum of industries including modern agriculture, alternative energy, resources recycling, mobile games, animation, luxury products, supply chain management, filmmaking and TV series production, displaying to readers the brand-new industrial structure of Chinese companies in the 21st century.

Learning Android Game Programming brings together all the knowledge and sample code that even casual or junior Android developers need to develop low-budget 2D games with Java and XML. For the first time, it makes Android game development practical for thousands of developers who don't have the resources to build highly-complex 3D games. Rather than focusing on difficult, highly-optimized native C libraries, this book relies on the far more accessible AndEngine framework and Java/Dalvik virtual machine. Coverage includes: Mobile game design principles, tools, and terminology Using the AndEngine framework, Java/Dalvik, and the Android SDK together Rendering images, using sprite sheets, and creating animations Working with text, fonts, tile maps, particles, and sound Supporting user input and creating an effective game interface Working with the physics engine Integrating, tuning, and testing the complete game Publishing games on Android Market or downloading them directly to Android devices

Moneyball

Moneyball is a quest for the secret of success in baseball. Following the low-budget Oakland Athletics, their larger-than-life general manger, Billy Beane, and the strange brotherhood of amateur baseball enthusiasts, Michael Lewis has written not only 'the single most influential baseball book ever' (Rob Neyer, Slate) but also what 'may be the best book ever written on business' (Weekly Standard). I wrote this book because I fell in love with a story. The story concerned a small group of undervalued professional baseball players and executives, many of whom had been rejected as unfit for the big leagues, who had turned themselves into one of the most successful franchises in Major League Baseball. But the idea for the book came well before I had good reason to write it-before I had a story to fall in love with. It began, really, with an innocent question: how did one of the poorest teams in baseball, the Oakland Athletics, win so many games? With these words Michael Lewis launches us into the funniest, smartest, and most contrarian book since, well, since Liar's Poker. Moneyball is a quest for something as elusive as the Holy Grail, something that money apparently can't buy: the secret of success in baseball. The logical places to look would be the front offices of major league teams, and the dugouts, perhaps even in the minds of the players themselves. Lewis mines all these possibilities-his intimate and original portraits of big league ballplayers are alone worth the price of admission-but the real jackpot is a cache of numbers-numbers!-collected over the years by a strange brotherhood of amateur baseball enthusiasts: software engineers, statisticians, Wall Street analysts, lawyers and physics professors. What these geek numbers show-no, prove-is that the traditional yardsticks of success for players and teams are fatally flawed. Even the box score misleads us by ignoring the crucial importance of the humble base-on-balls. This information has been around for years, and nobody inside Major League Baseball paid it any mind. And then came Billy Beane, General Manager of the Oakland Athletics. Billy paid attention to those numbers -with the second lowest payroll in baseball at his disposal he had to-and this book records his astonishing experiment in finding and fielding a team that nobody else wanted. Moneyball is a roller coaster ride: before the 2002 season opens, Oakland must relinquish its three most prominent (and expensive) players, is written off by just about everyone, and then comes roaring back to challenge the American League record for consecutive wins. In a narrative full of fabulous characters and brilliant excursions into the unexpected, Michael Lewis shows us how and why the new baseball knowledge works. He also sets up a sly and hilarious morality tale: Big Money, like Goliath, is always supposed to win... how can we not cheer for David?

New Traditional Games for Learning

A growing interest in the use of games-based approaches for learning has been tempered in many sectors by budget or time constraints associated with the design and development of detailed digital simulations and other high-end approaches. However, a number of practitioners and small creative groups have used low-cost, traditional approaches to games in learning effectively - involving simple card, board or indoor/outdoor activity games. New Traditional Games for Learning brings together examples of this approach, which span continents (UK, western and eastern Europe, the US, and Australia), sectors (education, training, and business) and learner styles or ages (primary through to adult and work-based learning or training). Together, the chapters provide a wealth of evidence-based ideas for the teacher, tutor, or trainer interested in using games for learning, but turned off by visible high-end examples. An editors' introduction pulls the collection together, identifying shared themes and drawing on the editors' own research in the use of games for learning. The book concludes with a chapter by a professional board game designer, incorporating themes prevalent in the preceding chapters and reflecting on game design, development and marketing in the commercial sector, providing valuable practical advice for those who want to take their own creations further.
